Botanical trails
Plants are a window in time, a living link between the present time and history – the age of Kaštelir. Material remains, artifacts and, of course, the local knowledge on the use of wild plant species that had thrived in this area before Kaštelir was built and will continue to thrive in the future bear witness to the cultural characteristics of that time. In the vicinity of each project area, you can admire and learn about the typical flora surrounding two botanical trails. The shorter route is in the immediate vicinity of Kaštelir. The longer route takes you through the surrounding landscape and is an excellent option for a half or full-day hike. On their individual learning paths, the visitors learn not only about typical individual plant species but also about typical plant communities. Different living environments and habitats of the cultural landscape are important as they make every learning path unique. The remains of old buildings, numerous dry stone walls, and abandoned sinkholes will take the hiker to a time when the landscape was different, particularly in the sense of being more agriculturally active than it is today.
